Research to practice for human capability

Build capability for work that keeps changing.

T-Michael Dougherty translates research on learning, performance, leadership, and AI into practical tools for professionals and organizations doing difficult work in changing conditions.

No hacks. No universal system. Evidence, context, and tools you can adapt.

Why this exists

Difficult work takes more than motivation.

When the work is consequential and conditions keep changing, effort alone is not enough. People need better ways to learn, preserve attention, exercise judgment, and help others adapt. Mastery Pathways examines the structures and practices that make those capabilities more likely.

Everything here does the translation for you: what the research found, what it means for how you work, and how to put it to use — without pretending the science says more than it does.

The promise

Learn difficult things. Think clearly under pressure. Lead change without surrendering judgment.

The podcast

The Mastery Project Podcast

The science of learning and performance, in pursuit of mastery.

Each episode takes one belief you’ve likely heard stated as fact — the 21-day habit, the 10,000-hour rule, learning styles — and holds it up against the actual research: what the studies found, where the evidence stops, and what’s worth keeping for your own practice.

About

Tools and science — never a prescribed system.

Mastery Pathways is where I turn research and experience into essays, conversations, practical tools, and selected projects. The goal is not to offer a universal method. It is to help thoughtful people understand evidence, see their circumstances more clearly, and make better decisions.

I don’t sell a finished system, because the research doesn’t support one-size answers. I teach how I built mine — and the science behind it — so you can build your own. For organizations, I help them build theirs.
