$5.99

Description
Mentoring is one of the few ways to pass on what you know while building leadership experience of your own. This course explains what a mentor does, and what a mentee is expected to bring. You’ll learn where to find a mentee and what to look for, then how a mentoring relationship moves from a first meeting through regular sessions to a planned ending. One lesson is devoted to probing questions, the technique that keeps a session useful. The last part covers five common problems, such as sessions with no focus or a mentee who leans on you for every idea, and what to do about each.
Two of the lessons include videos. The rest is reading broken into expandable sections, with flashcards, a readiness checklist, a scenario that asks how you would help a mentee, and a sorting activity on the do’s and don’ts of mentoring.
What you’ll be able to do
- Describe what a mentor does, from listening and advising to challenging a mentee and opening doors for them
- Decide whether you are ready to mentor someone now
- Recognize a good candidate for mentoring, including someone in transition or a top performer who needs a new challenge
- Run a first meeting that sets goals, roles, meeting frequency and how long the relationship will last
- Use open-ended probing questions to get a mentee to examine their own assumptions
- Give a mentoring session a structure: review the past, work on the present, agree on next steps
- Handle the five common mentoring problems, including unmet expectations and overdependence
