Performance Management: Giving Feedback
$5.99
A process for preparing and delivering feedback to an employee, and what to say when the employee reacts badly. Access lasts 365 days from purchase.
Description
Feedback is part of managing people, and many managers put it off because they are unsure how the employee will take it. This course gives you a structure for the conversation: prepare your message, share what you observed and its effect, state your expectations, ask for the employee’s view, and agree on next steps. It also explains how to keep feedback specific and about behavior rather than character. The second half covers five difficult reactions, from the silent treatment to anger, with wording you can use for each.
Two videos introduce the main ideas. The course ends with a practice scenario in which you give feedback to two employees and see how different phrasings land.
What you’ll be able to do

- Prepare for a feedback meeting by deciding its purpose and the outcome you want
- Lead the conversation through observation, expectations, the employee’s perspective and next steps
- Keep feedback specific and focused on behavior, and avoid ‘you are’ statements
- Respond to an employee who goes quiet, gets defensive, cries, half-commits or gets angry
- Set boundaries and state consequences when an employee refuses to engage
