Description

Two teams can have the same skills and get very different results. The difference is in how the people work together, and this course gives you a way to see it. You’ll learn what team dynamics are and what shapes them, what sets a high-performing team apart, and two models for reading the people on your team: the nine Belbin team roles and four common work styles. A later lesson explains behaviors that damage a team, such as free-riding and groupthink, and five things a manager can do about them. The last lesson covers a workplace with up to five generations in it and how to bridge the gaps between them.

Each lesson starts with a short video. The reading uses flashcards and expandable sections, with workplace scenarios throughout, and a short true-or-false quiz closes the course.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Recognize the signs of positive team dynamics, such as trust and open communication
  • Describe the six characteristics of a high-performing team and compare your own team against them
  • Identify the informal roles people take on a team using the nine Belbin team roles, and balance them
  • Work out a colleague’s work style from how they behave, and adjust how you communicate with them
  • Spot the causes of negative dynamics, such as blocking, free-riding and groupthink, and apply five strategies to improve them
  • Recognize how five generations in one workplace differ in communication and work preferences, and bridge the gaps
