Bradley Staats on How to Stay Relevant, Reinvent Yourself, and Thrive
$9.99
Bradley Staats, a business school professor, explains why most people are poor at learning and what dynamic learners do differently. You’ll learn how to treat failure as information and how to learn from the people around you. Other lessons cover questions, rest, strengths and specialization. Access lasts 365 days from purchase.
Description
Jobs and industries change, and the professionals who keep up are the ones who keep learning. This course, based on Staats’s book Never Stop Learning, covers the habits that make that possible and the biases that get in the way. You’ll learn why people overestimate how much failure will hurt and why experienced people stop asking questions. Later lessons cover rest and reflection, working from your strengths, specializing day to day while adding variety over time, and learning from other people.
Each lesson has a video from Staats followed by a reading, with flashcards and a sorting activity to check your understanding.
About the expert
Bradley Staats is a professor at the UNC Business School and the author of Never Stop Learning: Stay Relevant, Reinvent Yourself, and Thrive. The course draws on his own studies, including one with Francesca Gino on how task switching affected learning among bank workers. In the closing video he offers his parting advice on continuing to learn.
What you’ll be able to do
- Recognize impact bias, the tendency to overestimate how painful failure will be
- Evaluate your process regularly, looking for small improvements that add up
- Ask better questions by checking your confirmation bias and holding opinions loosely
- Make time to reflect, and explain why a reflection group outperformed a practice group in Staats’s study
- Decide which weaknesses to leave alone and which strengths to build on
- Follow a T-shaped model: stay specialized day to day and widen your subjects over the long term
- Build a transactive memory system by working with the same people over time
Who it’s for
Professionals at any stage who want to stay useful as their field changes, and managers who are responsible for how their teams learn.
