Description

What gets people to the top of an organization has less to do with pedigree than most of us assume. In this Expert Series course, Elena Botelho draws on the CEO Genome Project, a ten-year study of thousands of leaders, to describe what high-performing CEOs do differently. The first section clears away common myths about who becomes a CEO. The next four lessons take one behavior each: deciding quickly, adapting before a crisis forces you to, being reliable on small things as well as large, and engaging people in a way that moves them. The final section covers three career moves that get people ahead faster, the three stages of a typical path to the top job, and six hiring mistakes to avoid when building a team.

Botelho presents all nine lessons on video. Each lesson adds a short reading with flashcards and reflection prompts, and some end with a check on what you have learned.

About the expert

Elena Botelho is coauthor, with Kim Powell, of The CEO Next Door: The 4 Behaviors That Transform Ordinary People Into World-Class Leaders. The book grew out of the CEO Genome Project, a ten-year study of thousands of leaders. In the opening lesson she describes arriving in the United States from Russia in 1990 and learning English by studying the best communicators she could find, the approach she later applied to studying CEOs.
